As and excavator, I adhere to proven practices of earthmoving and compaction to make sure every pond holds water and is functional and aesthetically pleasing. We are quality driven!
Excavating beautiful ponds isn’t just “dig a hole and add water”—doing it right means working through a few clear stages so it holds water, stays stable, and doesn’t turn into a muddy problem.
- Size, depth, and shape
- Water source (rain runoff, spring, well)
- Soil type (clay holds water best)
You may also need permits depending on your area, especially if you’re altering drainage.
- Clear trees, and brushes
- Strip and stockpile topsoil
- Mark the pond boundaries and overflow location
- Use heavy equipment
- Dig in layers, shaping the basin
- Create slopes instead of vertical walls
- A trench may be dug in the dam area and packed with clay
- The pond bottom might be compacted or lined
- Smooth slopes
- Create shallow edges and deeper zones
- Add spillways or overflow paths to control water levels
- Rainfall and runoff
This stage can take time depending on your water source.
If you would like to tell me your goal, I can tailor the steps needed to transform your space into a beautiful pond.
